Save on Air Conditioning Costs

Summer is almost here! It’s time to make sure your air conditioning unit is ready for the summer heat. Champaign, Urbana, and the surrounding Illinois areas hit temperatures in the summer as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with average temperatures in the 80s. Learn how to save on air conditioning costs with these 5 A/C summer tips.

HOW TO SAVE ON AIR CONDITIONING COSTS

1. Schedule Professional A/C Maintenance

The first thing you want to do is schedule your annual air conditioning tune-up. You will save on air conditioning costs by having clean indoor and outdoor coils, proper refrigerant levels, and a calibrated thermostat. As a homeowner, you should seal your air ducts and remember to check and/or change your air filter every 30 days. Your HVAC system will run much more efficiently, saving you money and reducing breakdowns.

2. Create Shade for Your Home

Another way to save on air conditioning costs is to close your windows, drapes, and blinds during the day. Carefully placed trees, bushes, climbing ivy, awnings, and shutters will also help reduce solar heat gain. Conversely, if the temperatures cool down significantly during the night, consider opening a window or two to take advantage of this free cooling and ventilation. Just remember to close the windows again when you wake up.

3. Use Your Thermostat

Use your programmable thermostat to schedule exactly when your A/C will be running. You can set it to turn on while you are home and off while you are away. Without sacrificing comfort, you will be able to save on air conditioning costs by setting your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher while at home and 85 or higher while away. Schedule your programmable thermostat to kick on 30 minutes before you come home and don’t “oversteer” by reducing the thermostat setting to a colder temperature than normal to speed up the cooling process.

Quick tip: Make sure your thermostat is away from all heat sources, including the sun, lamps, and heat-producing appliances. The thermostat will produce inaccurate temperature readings and send the wrong commands to your air conditioning unit.

4. Use Alternative Cooling Methods

Another way to save on air conditioning costs? Don’t use it! Install and use ceiling fans to cool down; but remember, you are only saving money if the A/C is off. By strategically using attic fans, whole house fans, and ceiling fans, you could save up to 25% on your air conditioning costs. Call Cassel Home Comfort, your Champagin Heating and Cooling experts, for more information on how fans can help cool and ventilate your home.

5. Air Sealing

And finally, perhaps the most important of all, make sure you have proper air sealing around your home. This includes doors, windows, where utilities enter the home, basement, attics, ductwork, and fireplaces.

Install a programmable thermostat. With a programmable thermostat you can have more control over how much your system is running without sacrificing your comfort. You can have it run less while you are away from your home or during the night and then keep it at a comfortable temperature the rest of the time.
Don’t reduce your thermostat setting to a colder temperature than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. This “over-steering” will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and unnecessary expense.
